LEARN & IMPROVE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY
For complete beginners and advanced photographers alike, we cater to you.
This trip will involve you learning as much as we can possibly fit into our time together. I’ll always be working with you and your camera gear so that you will walk away a better photographer, get bucket list shots, and be inspired for your future photography shoots as you will have taken another step forward technically and creatively.
EXPERIENCE THE ROCKIES WITH A CERTIFIED GUIDE
Have confidence that you are with a professional guide who has your safety and enjoyment top of mind.
We are fully certified with two professional guiding associations in Canada, the ACMG (Association of Canadian Mountain Guides) as a Hiking Guide, and the IGA (Interpretive Guides Association) as a Professional Interpretive Guide. We are winter accredited in both as well meaning that we are an excellent year round choice to lead you on your next photo adventure.
WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING
Some testimonials from past guests:
– “Nick is incredibly knowledgeable about both photography and the surroundings we’re shooting in, which helped me connect more with the landscape. I learned so much in just a few days. He works with you and the style you like to shoot in and gives you tips and composition ideas. He ensured everyone in the workshop was safe and comfortable as well. I hope to do another workshop with Nick again!” – Ti-An
– “Spending a few days with Nick in the Banff area were days well spent! We loved Nick’s patience and knowledge, never once making us feel inadequate, whether it was with our cameras or our physical ability to go places. His gentle reminders about technical use of our gear, and pointing out amazing compositions were all appreciated. Nick is not just knowledgeable about photography, but we also learned so much about the area, the geography and history. Within hours of meeting Nick, I felt safe, as if my own son was taking me on a vacation. I would not hesitate to book another tour with Nick and take my love of photography and the outdoors even further” – Sheryl
ABRAHAM LAKE WINTER PHOTO ADVENTURES
(Offered between November & March each year)
What to expect
Explore Abraham Lake and photograph the famous frozen ice bubbles in winter on these photo adventures! We will stay in Nordegg for 1 night to maximize our time and be able to photograph the trifecta of sunrise, sunset & night photography at the lake.
These photo adventures are available to be privately booked if there isn’t an option for a group trip. The timing these are available ranges from November to March which provides for the best possibilities for photographing cool ice formation on Abraham Lake. Normally December & January offer the best possibilities for clear ice bubble stacks, however November provides icy foregrounds and open water, while February allows for impressive uplifted walls of ice as the lake levels sink (Abraham Lake is controlled by a hydro-electric dam which causes this) and March can bring even more variability to the ice. Going with a guide who knows where to go is recommended as services are limited and dangerous conditions are possible at any time of year on the ice depending on where you are and the recent weather.
We meet in Banff on the first day and convoy up the Icefields Parkway, arriving at Abraham Lake for sunset. This will be followed by a stay overnight in Nordegg, night photography, sunrise the next day and travel back to Banff finishing around lunch on the second day. Participants will need to arrange their own transportation or carpool. Winter tires are mandatory. Contact me if you would like to carpool.
Pricing includes 1v1 photography instruction throughout the trip, and a professional ACMG/IGA Hiking Guide.

FAQs
Where do we meet for this on day 1?
We will meet in the Banff area for sunrise to start at 7.30am so as to be ready in advance of any potential pre-dawn colours.
Where can I get food on this trip?
You will need to bring snacks and water with you with there being an opportunity to get lunch to go in Lake Louise on the first day. Dinner and breakfast will be in Nordegg at your own expense..
What happens in the case of poor weather?
The Abraham Lake Overnight Ice Photo Adventures will go ahead regardless of the weather conditions. Your photographs will look interesting in all types of weather and some of the most creative and unique photos come from the most improbable conditions! Bring weather appropriate clothing.
What level of photographer is this for?
All! We enjoy taking out complete beginners and teaching them all about their equipment and nature photography just the same as if we have a more experienced photographer who prefers more location guiding, safety considerations & logistics than photo instruction.
Will I need to sign a waiver to participate?
Yes, we will bring it for you to sign when we meet on the day of the photo tour. A copy will be provided in advance for viewing.
What is the cancellation & refund policy?
There are no refunds, however we do consider requests on a case by case basis. See our terms & conditions.
