NIGHT SKIES
About the ‘Night Skies’ portfolio
The first truly dark sky photograph I can remember taking was in 2009 at Abbott Pass Hut as my friend showed me how to record the stars and a portion of the milky way galaxy above Mt Lefroy on camera. We had lugged our heavy aluminum tripods from Moraine Lake over Wenkchemna and Opabin passes earlier that day en route to the hut for the purposes of shooting the golden hours with them at the pass. It was a shocking revelation at the time that I could record things I wasn’t able to see very well at night and I started to dabble in light painting and long exposures from then on. Now I am drawn to the challenges of crafting high quality, well executed night sky images. I often add a degree of difficulty to the process by valuing complex composition, exciting night sky phenomena and unique locations in my night sky shooting. Previsualization, scouting, multiple attempts, patience and a dose of luck are a requirement! These look great printed on metal surfaces that enhance and draw the eye to any available light in the scenes. Click through to the print shop to see pricing and available sizes.

WATER & GROWTH
About the ‘Water & Growth’ portfolio
Growing up in Tasmania we had an abundance of freshwater and unspoiled forest. I’m drawn to these things here in Canada as well but the window of opportunity for photographing them is narrower. The Alberta Rockies, in particular, are quite different. Much more dry and also snowbound for many months of the year so I value the opportunities that spring and summer provide even more so to chase glacially fed waterways, wildflowers and forested scenes in my photography. Most of these shots required the use of bug repellent prior to pressing the shutter! These look great printed on metal or acrylic surfaces allowing for the details and vibrancy to match the freshness of the seasons in which they were captured. SUMMIT SPLENDOUR
About the ‘Summit Splendour’ portfolio
Gone are the days of the summit beer celebration or the signing of an obscure summit register placed by Rick Collier. These have been replaced by sitting down and spending as much time as is feasible with a camera to my eye when I get up high on any mountainside. I’ve carted the camera gear up to the summit of over 200 mountains in the Canadian Rockies and that’s only counting each mountain once. I’ve ground the rubble in the gully on the ‘Tower of Babel’ over 30 times, serving wine at its top in full dining room attire replete with a tie, shiny shoes and a name tag on 4 of those occasions! Taking photographs in obscure places like at summits was a real driver for me in the beginning of my photographic journey. It still is when I get the opportunity but now I recognize that the obscure comes from within and that unique and fulfilling photographs can be made anywhere. These look great printed on acrylic to appreciate the details in the many textures and layers visible from summit vistas. Click through to the print shop to see pricing and available sizes.

WILDLIFE
About the ‘Wildlife’ portfolio
These are some of my chance encounters with wildlife in the Canadian Rockies. All images have been taken of them in their wild natural environments, in a respectful, non-disturbing manner. Now, if only I had been in position to capture the photo of the grizzly bear who was preying on the mountain goat right behind me on one such occasion! I’ll have to take the rare photographs of a family of wolverines I lucked upon in another encounter instead. These moments or sightings are never a goal of mine. They are however one of the absolute highlights of any trip in the mountains for me. Most of the time I enjoy these experiences without the interference of a camera and unconventionally my 200-600mm lens is used mostly for photos of distant landscapes. These look great printed large on any type of surface to appreciate these amazing, character filled locals up close. Click through to the print shop to see pricing and available sizes.

WINTER WALKS
About the ‘Winter Walks’ portfolio
Cold hands, gaiters, snowshoes, ice cleats, skis, wind chill, ice thickness, avalanche risk and an overall greater focus on safety are all potential considerations on a winter shoot in the Canadian Rockies where temperatures can sometimes reach 40 below. It is our longest season and what a spectacular season it is especially after a fresh snowfall, during a Chinook wind or when breaking fresh tracks in the snow. The landscape is simplified and the low angled lighting produces soft pleasant light all day long. These look great printed on gallery wrapped canvas where snow and softer colour palettes look beautiful. Click through to the print shop to see pricing and available sizes.

FALL FOLIAGE
FALL FOLIAGE
About the ‘Fall Foliage’ portfolio
Fall is my favourite time to photograph. It is fleeting, covering about 3 weeks of varying levels of predominantly yellow colour on the aspen and alpine larch trees here in the Canadian Rockies. The weather is variable, the first snowfall normally arrives higher up on the peaks, and the backcountry is still safely accessible. Water levels have also subsided allowing you to cross or get in rivers or atleast get closer to the flow for dynamic compositions. This all makes for some unforgettable photographic opportunities. My list of locations to return to in fall is always getting longer. These look great printed on any surface, it’s simply too hard to pick just one and it will depend on the photograph itself. ABSTRACT & INTIMATE
About the ‘Abstract & Intimate’ portfolio
These photographs tell a more subtle but equally important story of the landscape. A slice of the scene. They were often photographed on telephoto or macro lenses to exclude elements and hone in on patterns, layers, and areas of interest. Some of them are completely abstract, like with the creatively blurred intentional camera movement photographs. Seeing at this level didn’t come naturally to me in the beginning and it has been something that I’ve worked on year after year, coming to value equally with the more sweeping vistas common in landscape photography. These work extremely well as wall art of any kind especially if the colours and patterns fit with your space or if you are looking for something more artistic and thoughtful.
